Introduction

The trail commences in east Berwickshire, located close to the A1 trunk route some 65 miles each way from Edinburgh and Newcastle, both of which have international airports and good rail connections to Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

Commence with the James Hutton Exhibition at the Reiver Farm Shop, Auchencrow, 1 km along the B6437 off the A1 SE of Grantshouse; then to Hutton’s Farm at ‘Slighhouses’ and his Marl Pit, before exploring the drama of the Berwickshire coast and his classic unconformity at Siccar Point and the contrasting upland landscape of his Nether Monynut Farm. En route to his Inchbonny unconformity south of Jedburgh, visit Max Nowell’s sculpture at Lothian Park by Jedburgh Abbey and explore other geological sites including the Foulden Fish Beds, the Bedshiel Kaims, etc.
