The James Hutton Exhibition

‘Rocking the Boat’ (NT 854613)

James Hutton’s story sits comfortably in the farm shop near to where he farmed in the 1750’s. He described farming as “the story of my life”. Reiver Farm Shop is owned by Adam and Dawn Marshall who now farm where Hutton did at Slighhouses. He would have admired and congratulated their diversification enterprise and that of their business partner Sandy Pate. ‘Rocking the Boat’; sets the scene for the trail by exploring the influences on Hutton’s life and how his ‘unconformity’ rocked the boat! It includes a model of the Siccar Point landscape as it is today, and as it was 370 million years ago before the unconformity recognised by Hutton took place.
